Correctly De-Cocking a DA/SA Pistol

Writer's picture: Andy PfenningerAndy Pfenninger

After the 'Load and Make Ready' command, a DA/SA pistol has to be de-cocked to the safety notch.

De-Cocking an External Hammer

If the pistol has a de-cocking lever, the lever must be used.

If the pistol does not have a de-cocking lever, the shooter must block the hammer from reaching the firing pin, using his weak hand thumb, while pulling the trigger.

Pulling Trigger with Blocked Hammer

In this way, the hammer is blocked from moving all the way forward and touching the firing pin. It is impossible for the hammer to accidentally slip from the the grip of the shooter. A negligent discharge is thus positively prevented.

Unload and show clear: safely lowering the hammer
Safely Lower the Hammer

Once the hammer rests against the thumb, the shooter will remove his finger from the trigger. With the finger outside and above the triggerguard, the hammer can then safely be lowered without touching the trigger and will be caught by the safety notch.

Thank you for reading and hope to see you at the range soon!

Sincerely

Andy
