For competitors, there are two certifications: handgun and rifle (2-gun). The handgun certification is a prerequisite for the rifle certification.
The initial competitor certification is assessed by a certified CMA instructor.
New competitors, already possessing solid basic handgun skills, attend the CMA Handgun Intro course to get certified. Part of the course, serving as the practical certification test, will be the Handgun Skills Test.

After the handgun certification, a shooter can proceed to the rifle certification. He or she needs to already have solid basic rifle proficiency, before taking the CMA Rifle Intro course. The practical certification test will be the rifle skills test, done during the course.

A certification has to be renewed at least once every 12 months.
The handgun and 2-gun certifications are valid for 12 months. Within this duration, successfully shooting the corresponding skills test will extend the certification for another 12 months. Every certified safety officer can assess the skills test and upload the result. In theory, one can shoot a skills test once every day.
Once the certification is expired, only a certified instructor can renew the certification. The instructor decides whether it is sufficient to shoot the skills test or whether the shooter must attend the intro course again. This is dependent on the shooters knowledge, experience and skills level.
The purpose of the renewal is to assure a reasonable skill level for all participants in CMA competitions.
The handgun and rifle skills tests serve as the practical tests to obtain or renew the competitor certifications.
The tests are designed to cover the handgun and rifle skills matrix respectively. A skills matrix contains all the basic skills a competitor needs to possess.

A shooter must first obtain the handgun certification and may then proceed to the rifle certification.
The skills tests have to be repeated at least once every 12 months in order for the certification to remain valid.

You can check your current certification status and your skills test history online on your personal dashboard: https://www.cma-sport.com/account/dashboard (https://www.cma-sport.com/account/dashboard)
You can also generate your digital CMA ID for offline use on your dashboard. It shows all your current membership and certification data.
There are five skill levels (or classes) in CMA, determined by shooting the skills tests:
- Rookie (RK)
- Marksman (MM)
- Advanced (AV)
- Expert (EX)
- Master (MA)
One purpose is to provide a framework for shooters to assess their skill level and track their personal improvement. It's a good means to measure the effectiveness of practice using an objective test and climbing up the levels.
Another purpose is to be able to make rankings for classes or groups of classes in matches with a large number of participants. For example, the match director can group MA/EX and AV/MM/RK respectively, and thus make two rankings for a given division. This allows for more winners and more success stories. Several rankings per division only make sense, if there is a large number of competitors in that division and in the class or group of classes, of course.
The handgun skill level is valid for all handgun divisions and the 2-gun skill level for all 2-gun divisions. If a competitor starts in a different division than he or she previously did, it is not required to do another skills test for the new division.
Shooters can only move upward in the skill levels. At the moment, downgrading is not a topic.
